Funeral Policy Terms and Conditions
Funeral policies are underwritten and administered by an authorised insurer. The terms and conditions below provide a summary of key policy provisions. Full policy wording and policy schedules will apply and are available on request.
1. Eligibility for Cover
Cover is only available to South African citizens who possess a valid South African Identity Document and who permanently reside in South Africa.
2. Premium Payments
Funeral policy premiums are payable monthly in advance. Failure to pay premiums may result in the lapse of cover.
3. Cooling-Off Period
A cooling-off period of thirty (30) days applies from the date of inception of the policy. During this period, the policyholder may request a refund of premiums paid.
4. Policy Cancellation
The policyholder may cancel the policy by providing thirty (30) days’ written notice. No refund of premiums will be payable upon cancellation.
5. Accidental Benefits
This policy does not provide accidental benefits, including but not limited to double payment in the event of accidental death.
6. Waiting Period for Natural Death
A waiting period of six (6) months from the date of inception of the policy will apply in respect of death due to natural causes where no previous cover has been in place.
7. Waiting Period for Suicide
A waiting period of twelve (12) months from the date of inception of the policy will apply in respect of death due to suicide where no previous cover has been in place.
8. Accidental Death Benefit
No waiting period shall apply in the event of accidental death, provided that the first premium has been paid in full and that the policy has been accepted by the insurer prior to the date of death.
9. Exclusions
Death resulting from active participation in war, terrorism, illegal activity, or riots is excluded from cover.
10. Notification of Newborn Children
The main member is required to notify the insurer of any newborn child within thirty (30) days of the child’s date of birth.
11. Stillborn Benefit
Stillborn benefits will only be payable where the pregnancy exceeded twenty-six (26) weeks and where the main member was the biological parent. No benefits will be paid in respect of extended family members or children of the main member.
12. Child Benefit Scale
In the event of the death of a child under the age of twenty-one (21) years, a benefit will be paid according to the benefit scale below, based on the age of the child at the time of death:
